AU; Dramione AND Everlark, Part 2 [Part 1]
As she rose into the arena, Katniss tried to fill her thoughts with anything but what was about to occur. She thought of training, which was much more painful this time around. Katniss had seen the lighthearted competition and naivety of the 74th Hunger Games’ training leave the room. The Quell had only reaped previous tributes who had seen the blood and gore of the battle, and not even the smuggest of smiles played on any faces.
Katniss thought of Draco and Hermione, the tributes of District 1 that Haymitch had pushed her and Peeta to befriend. Their only interaction had been awkward, if anything, but there had been an unspoken agreement on teaming up. The closeness of the pair confused Katniss, as Draco and Hermione seemed to be worlds apart. Draco had come off as arrogant and self-interested with a sharp tongue. Hermione, on the other hand, was much more humble and thought before she spoke. Her words tumbled out in a nervous tone, but every motion seemed to be calculated. But Katniss remembered Draco’s arm that had remained around Hermione’s waist, and the softness of his voice when he spoke to her. Their body language reminded her of what had developed between her and Peeta.
“Hi, I’m Katniss Everdeen, from District-““We know who you are, Miss Everdeen,” Draco had interrupted her introduction. “I’m Draco Malfoy and this is Hermione Granger.”“Draco, it is not kind to interrupt,” Hermione pouted.
Katniss stood awkwardly in front of the two as they scowled at each other. She would have believed that a fight was going to break out had she not noticed Draco grasping Hermione’s hand and giving it the slightest squeeze. So this is how we differ, Katniss thought. These two seem to thrive off each other’s differences where as Peeta and I focus on our similarities.
“I wanted to wish you both luck,” Katniss said with a smile, remembering the script a wary Haymitch had drawn up for her. “My mentor is old friends with your mentor, I heard. He said he’s old drinking buddies with Harry.”“Ha, Potter,” scoffed Draco. “Yes, well I’m sure we are in agreement on how these Games should go then.”
Katniss hated not being straightforward, but Haymitch had forbidden her from saying “allies” out loud. She hesitated after Draco’s words, and the pair of District 1 tributes noticed. Hermione’s eyes found hers and Katniss noted how soft and kind they seemed. She laid a hand on Katniss’s shoulder.
“That means we’re with you whatever happens,” Hermione smiled.
